The terms V repeat and H repeat refer to the vertical and horizontal repeats of a pattern, respectively. A repeat is the distance between two identical points in a pattern, or the size of the pattern. 

The horizontal repeat is measured across the width of the fabric, perpendicular to the selvages, while the vertical repeat is measured over the length of the fabric, parallel to the selvages.
